S&T Documentation

The original Diamond Valley "B" Signalbox.
The Signalbox at Diamond Valley was built in 1972, and controls all Main line movements from local Diamond Valley Passenger trains & express Special passenger trains to Yard shunting and passenger stock storage. All train movements from the two Diamond Valley station platforms are directed along the intended route by the use of a 44 lever miniature "interlocked" frame and monitored on the large illuminated diagram.

The majority of signals and points are Hydraulically operated. Two position Semaphore signalling incorporates a majority of the safeworking at Diamond Valley. Signalmen are responsible for the correct routing of trains with trains regularly obtaining 30 second departure clearances.

The Old "B" Box is now but a shell awaiting demolition. It was replaced by the current "B" Box late January 2005.

Nillumbik Siding Control Panel.
The Control Panel for Nillumbik Siding was built in 1993 for control of the remote storage sidings at Nillumbik.

At the time of construction, Nillumbik was a single track stabling siding, however with the construction of the New Workshops, a run around loop and storage for 6 full carriage sets was added.

The signalling at Nillumbik is Two position signalling (Light) and the panel has the availability of being "Switched Out" to run automatically.
44 Lever Interlocked Frame - Diamond Valley "B".

The 44 lever interlocking machine was installed at the Diamond Valley Railway in 1982. It replaced a series of "Taps" that were operationg hydraulic pistons on the semaphore signals and points.

The levers are color coded for signal / point & lockbar identification and are electrically interlocked to prevent opposing train movements from being performed. The color coding for levers is:

RED:Signals/ Track CONTROL levers
BLACK:Points.
BLUE:Facing point LOCKS.
BLACK /
WHITE:Switch IN OUT, PILOT levers.

Indicators above the levers show the signalman the status of each signal or point. An Illuminated diagram above the lever frame indicates positions of trains throughout the Diamond Valley area.
Illuminated Diagram.

The illuminated diagram shows the location of trains on the mainline. This Diagram has lights on for train occupation. The diagram has had many revisions over time.
