AIMS This amazing 7 1/4 inch gauge railway was established in 1960, with the aim of providing people, who are not normally railway men and women, with the opportunity of building and operating a real passenger carrying railway system in miniature. So can I volunteer? Absolutely ! DVR is a great organisation where you can make a difference, and enjoy it with many other like-minded people from all walks of life. There are so many areas you can be involved in, and the opportunity to learn about many more under skilled guidance. It is a fantastic and rewarding hobby to become involved with. Volunteers are invited to be a part of the DVR story Operational Days: Members get together at the Railway on Sundays for train operations. Wednesdays are usually the day when retired members arrive to share each others comradeship and to repair and maintain the track, signals and equipment so that the Railway is kept in good condition. Members may also come at other times to management meetings or to undertake specific work on their equipment. MEMBERSHIP Membership is open to any interested person who is over the age of 16 years.Young people above 14 years may also join if they have a parent or guardian who is already a member. It is worthwhile to mention that volunteering is not onerous. Full membership requires 1 day per month, associate membership less. HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE RAILWAY "This could be fun". Well, that's right You can really enjoy being part of this Railway. So read on and think about how you can contribute. There is so much you can do to learn about the Railway, ie;-
We need people to help operate and man the station. This is a great introduction to our railway where you meet all your fellow members as well as greet and assist the general public boarding and alighting from our trains. It is the place to liaise with the public, and where we seek to present our organisation in the best light. ROLLING STOCK The Locomotive fleet consists of models of steam, diesel and electric outline locomotives owned by the Railway and by private members.
You can help in the workshop, or with the running of the trains. Helping repair and maintain the Rollingstock helps DVR actually operate. You could perform vital work and make a real difference in this area. Driving a train is a responsible and a fulfilling experience, that you attain after a easy but regulated training regime. Then there is the ultimate and challanging opportunity to train and be a steam loco driver which requires a different set of skills. Talk to one of our steam engine drivers anytime you are at the Railway, they love the challenge! |

SIGNALLING & SAFEWORKING
All signalling used at the DVR incorporates old and modern style signalling systems controlled by Signal Boxes located at strategic positions around the railway. Being a Guard is a great benefit to the Railway, and is the stepping stone to driving and or becoimming a signalman - all of which is very rewarding. Controlling the passage of the trains is a vital and responsible task to keep the railway running. Then there is the behind the scenes work of wiring, laying cable, fault fixing, and many other activities.
TRACK & LINESIDE FEATURES.
Building and maintaining the track and buildings helps the railway keep on working and operating. Another enduring feature of the Railway is the ongoing need for members to preserve the bushland environment, parks and gardens along the banks of Diamond Creek through which the trains run. SPECIAL GROUPS The Railway prides itself on encouraging diversity and we have a Heritage Group that preserves our heritage rolling stock, locomotives and equipment for posterity, as well as a number of carriage and locomotive work groups who are currently restoring or building new equipment. An archives research group has also been formed to record our history and past members who have contributed to our success over the years. |
